Where’s the Love for Venus?

6999522_36_1.jpg

When Venus Williams won her fourth Wimbledon title on July 7th, it was her sixth Grand Slam title. To give you the full effect of this accomplishment – Pete Sampras and Billiie Jean-King are the only Americans that have won Wimbledon more than Willams in the Open Era (beginning at Wimbledon in 1968).

She has more Grand Slam wins (6) than Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, Maria Sharapova, and Jennifer Capriati. As far as the men go she has won Wimbledon more than Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi and America’s hearthrob Andy Roddick combined. She has as many Grand Slam titles as Boris Becker and more than Jim Courier, Rafael Nadal, and Pat Rafter.

Besides the fact that women’s tennis has been the biggest draw since Venus and Serena stepped on the scene, this year Willaims singlehandedly had the women’s prize earnings equaled to that of the men for the French Open and Wimbledon.

Here’s a thought, if Willams just showed up and played for a quarterfinal check like Roddick, or not even crack the Top 50 for her career like Anna Kournikova – maybe then she would open some eyes.
